Luděk Sládek
jury member no. 6

Luděk Sládek

Editor-in-chief and co-owner of the KAM po Česku publishing house

  • He was born in the town of the writer Karel Poláček — simply because that was where the maternity hospital stood. He spent his youth in the Rychnov area of the Orlické foothills, between the Wild and the Quiet Orlice rivers.
  • His first journeys of discovery were down to his grandmother, with whom he travelled from the moment she no longer had to change his nappies. Then came school trips, with a packed lunch and a satchel. He completed his business academy studies in Prague.
  • Prague and its genius loci captivated him and have permanently shaped his path towards places that are significant, architecturally exceptional or little known — but always with a story to tell.
  • Further discoveries came during his military service, which introduced him to the rugged Frýdek-Místek region.
  • He spent his teenage years in the shadow of Plečnik’s church in Vinohrady. Then, weighed down by a wife, a son, a daughter and assorted worries, he moved into Jaroslav Seifert’s former flat in Prague’s Žižkov, allocated to him by the municipal housing authority.
  • There, over time, he crossed over to the dark side of tourism. As a Žižkov patriot, he successfully spread the district’s bad reputation in order to protect it from intruders.
  • He devoted several years to the National Heritage Institute, in its booking and marketing department, passed through a few editorial offices, and has travelled and walked a large part of Czechia and Slovakia.
  • For the past 16 years he has been building the KAM po Česku brand.
